The team meets to discuss how to get started, and youre excited to propose your approach.Passive Approach You wait for your boss to make the first suggestion, then take the path of least resistance by agreeing, rather than putting your idea on the table or even suggesting ways to improve upon her strategy.Aggressive Approach You immediately present your perfect idea as the one the team needs to adopt and, without taking a breath, begin assigning tasks. If anyone tries to suggest an alternative, you shake your head and say, That wont work. All the while, youre pretending not to notice the eye-rolls happening around the table.Assertive Approach As you listen to the various suggestions your colleagues are floating, you both acknowledge their strong points and assume a role in solving potential challeng es. You might say, for example, Its a great idea to track prospective client interactions. What if we did it over six months instead of three? That would allow us to collect more data and make better decisions for the next fiscal year.In this last scenario, youve stated your case in a way that acknowledges others perspectives and backed up your ideas with factual reasoning, rather than emotions. But later, you go home and complain about it for hours, because you feel its completely unjust.Aggressive Approach After being told youll need to wait for a raise, you inform your boss that youre going to begin to look for opportunities elsewhere- where someone will treat you like you deserve to be treated.Assertive Approach Because you respect yourself and your need to be compensated fairly as much as you want to understand your boss reasoning, you dont let your bruised ego get the best of you and lash out. Instead, you ask for more clarity on the companys future and define tangible goals and targets that you can review when you revisit your salary request down the road. In the assertive approach, youre showing resilience by responding in a proactive, future-oriented manner, signaling maturity, level-headedness, and a commitment to the company. Situation 3 Managing the Team for T op ResultsOne of your direct reports is seriously missing the mark. His deliverables are sloppy, other colleagues are starting to complain about having to plektron up his slack, and on top of all that, he rolls in late every day. Its time to step in.Passive Approach Next time he turns in a terrible first draft of a report, you stay up until 2 AM redoing it on your own- and then fume about his poor performance to other colleagues when hes not around.Aggressive Approach Go full-on Jerry McGuire on him, demanding to know why hes so stupid, assuring him that hes unhirable anywhere else, and that youre doing him a favor by not letting him go- all but firing him on the spot. Assertive Approach In a private meeting, you clearly communicate why his work isnt acceptable, pointing to his failure to satisfy core procedural requirements, but are careful not to take aim at his personal qualities. Harnessing your emotional intelligence and empathy, you invite him to let you know if there is anyth ing else going on. Perhaps hes struggling with personal issues that are detracting his focus from work. Or, maybe hes not clear on your instructions. To keep projects on track and better your relationship, you schedule a weekly meeting to check in and create a channel for clear communication.In the final option, youve taken control of the situation instead of letting the problem linger and have presented a scenario in which both you and your report win. How to Spot Buying Signals From ProspectsHow to Spot Buying Signals From ProspectsWhen a prospect starts to consider buying from you, he probably wont come right out and say it. In fact, he might not even realize how interested he is. Instead of openly stating his interest, most prospects will start to make buying signals, in the form of either questions or statements. Being able to recognize these buying signals will give you a strong advantage. When a Prospect AsksQuestions It Is An Encouraging Sign Any time a prospect asks you questions during your ?sales presentation, its an encouraging sign. After all, its a prospect wasnt interested at all he wouldnt bother asking you questions. But certain questions send a particularly strong statement of interest. unterstellung are generally questions that indicate the prospect is imagining himself owning the product. For example, a prospect might ask a question such as, Who will be responsible for supporting the product? or How long does delivery take? These are extremely strong buying signals and should indicate to you that the customer is really interested. Once youve answered the prospects question, you can develop his interest further by painting a picture of what his life will be like once he owns the product.? Another strong buying signal would be when a prospect asks you to repeat something or digs for more information. For example, he might say What else can this product do? or Can you go into more detail about that brde feature? This tells you which aspect of your presentation or of the product itself he found particularly interesting. Such an interest usually points out a hot button or pain point that you can later emphasize in your presentation to help seal the deal. Objections are usually a buying signal, although not as powerful a one. When a prospect makes an objection, it means hes considering buying but is concerned about one or more aspects of the purchase. Questions like What if Im not satisfied w ith the product? or statements like I cant afford this mean that youve at least started to pique the prospects interest. Handling Objections When handling objections, remember that the prospect is trying to tell you hes interested but doesnt have enough information to decide for sure if he wants to buy. If you can give him the information that he needs, you can pretty much count on closing the deal. So objections are a good sign, not a problem treat them with respect, and theyll lead you straight to a sale. Objections arent the only statements a prospect might make as a buying signal. If a prospect says something like, That feature sounds fantastic, or This would work really well with our existing systems, its a pretty strong statement of interest. Keep in mind that in rare cases, a prospect might use such strong statements as a false buying signal. These canny prospects are trying to raise your hopes so that they can negotiate from a stronger bargaining position. Most prospect s will make these statements in perfect sincerity, but its wise to be a bit wary. Easing Into a Purchase A buying signal, even a very strong one, isnt necessarily your cue to dive into a close. Almost everyone has a resistance to being sold and if they start to feel like youre pressuring them, theyre likely to push back. So rather than hit the prospect over the head with your most powerful close, try easing them into the purchase. If you get a strong buying signal, and you feel its appropriate, it might be a good time to use a trial close. If the prospect responds well, you can proceed to the close. If not, you still have the option to back off a bit and continue with the sales process.?
